Marcellus, Utica, Permian and Eagle Ford Plays
NextEra’s $13B Gas Plant Going to Fayette County, PA. Thanks, MDN. For six months we’ve been asking one question about NextEra Energy’s giant southwestern Pennsylvania gas plant: where? We finally have an answer — Luzerne Township, Fayette County, on 700 acres of former coal ground along the Monongahela River. And with the answer come some numbers that don’t quite match what Washington told us back in March. The Pittsburgh Business Times (PBT) reported yesterday (Sept. 1) that NextEra Energy Resources briefed Fayette County and local officials on what the company is calling the East Riverside Energy Center. The site sits near East Riverside Road and Palmer Adah Road, and NextEra has already bought one piece of the property with agreements in hand for the rest. Longtime readers will recall that back in March we speculated the plant would land in Fayette, Greene, or Washington county (see Speculation on SWPA Location of NextEra’s 4.3-GW Gas-Powered Site). Fayette it is.
NatGas Power Proposals Double in 6 months. U.S. gas power proposals tied to data centers nearly double in six months. Global Energy Monitor. In the first half of the year, the United States nearly doubled the gas-fired capacity it is developing to directly power data centers, but uncertainty persists about how and when this capacity gets built, according to a new analysis from Global Energy Monitor. The Global Oil and Gas Plant Tracker now counts 189 gigawatts (GW) of gas-fired capacity in the U.S. across the announced, pre-construction, and construction phases, which is intended to meet the exponential increase in electricity demand brought by the booming data center expansion.
EQT Pipeline from Greene County PA to Monroe County, OH. Thanks, MDN. EQT is planning another pipeline — and this one is big. Through a brand-new subsidiary called Appalachian Transmission Gateway LLC (ATG), the Marcellus/Utica’s largest driller has opened bidding on the “POWER Pipeline,” a 42-inch, 50-mile line that would carry a full 1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of gas from Greene County, Pennsylvania, west to the Clarington hub in Monroe County, Ohio. The open season quietly began Aug. 26 and runs through Oct. 26. We found no press release announcing it — the notice simply went up, and the trade press caught it a week later.
Prime Data Centers Begins Hearings for Data Center in Washington County, PA. Thanks, MDN. A Dallas-based hyperscaler wants to build a 1.7-million-square-foot computing campus — plus its very own 450-megawatt natural gas power plant — on a reclaimed strip mine in Washington County, PA. The gas would come off a lateral tied to Energy Transfer’s Rover Pipeline, which runs right past the property line. Prime Data Centers made its first real presentation to the Hanover Township Board of Supervisors Monday night, in front of a fire hall packed past capacity with residents who are, to put it mildly, not sold. Three hours of testimony later, the supervisors scheduled four more hearings.
Drilling Slowed in PA. Thanks, MDN. Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Independent Fiscal Office (IFO) released its quarterly Natural Gas Production Report covering April through June 2026 (full copy below). Three numbers, all pointing in the same direction: PA drillers spudded (started drilling) 89 new horizontal wells in 2Q26, down 16 wells (-15.2%) from the 105 spudded in 2Q25. Production volume was 1,925 billion cubic feet (Bcf), down 32 Bcf (-1.6%) from 1,957 Bcf in 2Q25 — the lowest quarterly volume since 4Q24. And the average Pennsylvania spot hub price was $2.11 per MMBtu, down 27 cents (-11.3%) from last year’s $2.38.
Constitution Pipeline Can Put New Yorkers Back to Work—and Help Keep Energy Affordable. Empire Report. Opinion. New York’s energy future will not be built by slogans. It will be built by skilled people doing demanding work: the union labor force that constructs, operates, maintains, and restores the systems families and businesses rely on every day. That is why the Constitution Pipeline deserves a serious, constructive look from utility leaders, regulators, and customers. Its construction should be the start of a broader commitment to practical energy infrastructure—one that pairs affordability and reliability with lasting opportunity for organized labor.
ONEOK to Buy Brazos Midstream’s Permian Assets for $4.43 Billion. The Wall Street Journal. ONEOK is set to acquire Brazos Midstream’s Permian Midland Basin natural gas gathering and processing assets for $4.43 billion, expanding its footprint in prolific American oil hub. The energy midstream company said Sunday that the deal is backed by a $9 billion nonvoting minority equity investment from funds and affiliates managed by Apollo Global Management. With the remaining funds, ONEOK said it plans reduce its debts by $5 billion. The acquisition more than doubles ONEOK’s Midland Basin processing capacity to about 2.3 billion cubic feet a day, including plants that are currently being built.
