Marcellus, Utica, Permian and Eagle Ford Plays
Amazon Coming to Homer City. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has filed proposals to build a massive, 39-building data center campus on the site of the former Homer City Generating Station in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The project is a key piece of Amazon’s broader plan to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania.

Homer City Workforce Increases to 2,000. The hill above Homer City now has more people working on it than the borough below has living in it. Homer City Generation dropped a Labor Day announcement on Friday: more than 1,800 direct-hire tradespeople and skilled contractors are on site building the 4.4-gigawatt (GW) gas-fired plant and data center campus rising from the bones of what was once Pennsylvania’s largest coal-fired power station. The borough of Homer City has roughly 1,800 residents. That’s a nice bit of symmetry, and it says more about what this project means to Indiana County than any press release paragraph could.
EQT Another #1. Thanks, MDN. Accounting giant Ernst & Young dropped its annual reserves benchmarking study yesterday, and while the press release leads with oil, the real story for our part of the country is buried in the tables: EQT is now the largest holder of proved natural gas reserves in the United States, and Appalachian-focused producers control roughly a third of all the gas reserves booked by America’s 30 biggest publicly traded drillers.
Why EOG Loves OH. Thanks, MDN. EOG Resources, the biggest acreage holder in the Ohio Utica, sent Chief Operating Officer Jeff Leitzell to the Barclays 40th Annual Energy-Power Conference yesterday (Sept. 9), and he spent a good chunk of his stage time explaining exactly how EOG thinks about our play. We’ve heard some of it before. But Leitzell went deeper on Utica geology than the company usually does on an earnings call — including a north-versus-south distinction that shapes how tightly EOG spaces its wells — and he dropped a fresh well-results number: three inherited Encino wells with 3.5-mile laterals that each came online at more than 35 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d). He also confirmed that Ohio’s first in-basin frack sand mine is still on track for a year-end startup, and that the savings from it are not yet baked into EOG’s cost numbers.
Bullish NatGas Report through 2030. The shale gas sector is positioned for impressive expansion over the coming years as it plays a crucial role in the global energy transition. Growing demand for cleaner fossil fuels combined with technological advancements is set to boost the market significantly. Let’s explore the current market size, the key companies involved, important trends shaping the industry, and the various segments defining the shale gas market.
Rapid Expansion Expected in the Shale Gas Market Value by 2030
The shale gas market is forecasted to grow rapidly, reaching a valuation of $172.64 billion by 2030. This surge translates into a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.5%. Several factors are driving this expansion, including the increasing use of shale gas as a transitional energy source, growth in gas-powered electricity generation, improved extraction technologies, development of transportation infrastructure, and the growing demand for cleaner-burning fossil fuels. Key trends expected to influence the market include advancements in hydraulic fracturing techniques, enhanced efficiency of horizontal drilling, optimized water management practices, digital well monitoring, and reduced exploration costs.

U.S. NatGas Output and Demand to Record levels in 2026 and 2027. U.S. natural gas output, demand to hit record highs in 2026 and 2027, EIA says. Reuters. U.S. natural gas supply and demand will both rise to record highs in 2026 and 2027, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said in its Short-Term Energy Outlook on Wednesday. The EIA projected dry gas production will rise from a record 107.6 billion cubic feet per day in 2025 to 111.7 bcfd in 2026 and 115.9 bcfd in 2027.
Grenadier Makes Ohio Utica Entrance with 20-MMcf/d Wells. Hart Energy. Pat Noyes and team at EnCap Investments-backed Grenadier Energy III have joined EOG Resources, Infinity Natural Resources, Ascent Resources and others in eastern Ohio’s Utica play. The E&P put its first three wells online this spring, producing 26,705 bbl and 3.5 Bcf of gas—or more than a Bcf each—in their average first 59 days in Belmont County, according to data released recently by Ohio’s Department of Natural Resources.
Devon Energy to Build Pipeline in Susquehanna County, PA. Thanks, MDN. Devon Energy’s Coterra unit is asking Pennsylvania regulators for permission to lay 18.4 miles of 20-inch freshwater pipeline across three Susquehanna County townships — which is a strange thing to spend money on if you’re about to sell the place. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) published the notice in the September 5 Pennsylvania Bulletin, opening a comment window that closes October 5. The project is the Brooks to Forwood Temporary Waterline, running through Springville, Lathrop, and Lenox townships.
Court Halts NESE Pipeline. Court halts New York harbor gas pipeline backed by Trump. The New York Times. A federal appeals court on Tuesday halted plans for a controversial underwater natural gas pipeline that would skirt the shores of New York City and New Jersey and that has won the fervent backing of the Trump administration. The ruling by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia centered on the granting of a water permit by New Jersey regulators, a decision the court described as “arbitrary and capricious.” The $1 billion Northeast Supply Enhancement pipeline would provide a 23-mile underwater extension, plus several more miles on land, to an existing natural gas network and would run mostly under Raritan Bay and New York Harbor.
$6 Diesel. Petroleum expert says record-setting $6 diesel is days away and ‘unavoidable’. Penn Live. A petroleum expert on Wednesday said diesel prices will hit a record national average of $6 a gallon after crude oil surged over $100 a barrel. “Diesel history is about to be made. $6/gal nationally — never seen before, days away, it’s now in the pipeline, unavoidable,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, on X.
