Fall Garden Prep Starts Now: 5 Things to Do in August
Believe it or not, August is the perfect time to get your garden ready for fall. While the sun is still high and the tomatoes are ripening on the vine, smart gardeners are already thinking ahead. Whether you’re growing vegetables, tending to flower beds, or just keeping your landscape tidy, a little prep work now can make a big difference in the months to come.
Here are 5 things to tackle this August to get your garden fall-ready:
- Clean Out Spent Plants
By late summer, many early crops (like lettuce, peas, or spinach) are done producing. Pull out those tired plants, remove weeds, and give your garden a fresh start. Clearing out dead or diseased plants now helps prevent pests and fungal issues that can carry over into fall.
Co-op Tip: Toss healthy plant matter into your compost pile and stop by the Marshall County Co-op for compost bins, gloves, and tools to make cleanup a breeze.
- Plant for a Fall Harvest
Yes, you can still plant! August is ideal for sowing fast-growing crops that love cooler temperatures. Think leafy greens like kale, spinach, and arugula, or root veggies like radishes, carrots, and beets.

- Rejuvenate Your Soil
After a summer of hard work, your soil might be depleted. Add compost, aged manure, or an organic soil builder to replenish nutrients and improve structure before your next planting.
In Stock Now: Organic compost, garden amendments, and soil test kits to make sure you’re giving your plants the best foundation.
- Mulch and Water Wisely
Mulch isn’t just for spring! Applying a fresh layer in August helps retain moisture during dry spells and keeps weeds in check as fall approaches. Plus, it gives your beds a tidy, finished look.
Smart Watering Tip: Deep watering early in the day helps roots grow strong. Come see our selection of soaker hoses and water timers.
- Start Thinking About Fall Color
Now’s the time to plan your fall flower beds and porch displays. Mums, pansies, ornamental cabbage, and decorative pumpkins will be arriving soon, and early birds get the best picks!
