Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed legislation to expand solar and wind power in New Mexico and to modernize the state’s electric grid to allow for increased export of renewable energy, Kallanish Energy reports.

The three bills are designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, boost economic diversification and expand renewable energy, the governor said last week.

The legislation is expected to increase wind and solar development in New Mexico and to cut pollution from oil and natural gas operations in the state.

The bills were opposed by Power the Future New Mexico representing fossil fuel workers, New Mexico media reported.

One bill would reinstate a state income credit of up to $6,000 to residents and businesses for solar panels or thermal solar equipment to heat water.

The state would forego up to $8 million in taxes to offset the investment.
