Wintershall Dea is looking into expanding its activities and operations in Algeria, Africa’s largest natural gas producer, Kallanish Energy reports.
The German oil and gas company signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Algerian state-owned Sonatrach to explore cooperation possibilities in the country.
The companies are partners in the Reggane Nord concession, a project of six gas fields in the South-Western Sahara Desert. Wintershall Dea owns a 19.5% stake in the consortium operating the project, which also includes Spain’s Repsol and Italy’s Edison.
“In 2020 we are evaluating a potential increase of activities in the country, and this MoU is an important step forward,” Wintershall’s chief operating officer Dawn Summers said in a statement earlier this week.
The companies didn’t disclose the potential areas of interest.
