India has entered “a new era of transportation” with the delivery of its first liquefied natural gas-powered buses, Tata Motors said earlier this week.
The country’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer delivered four units to LNG Petronet Limited – two in Kochi and two in Kerala. The so-called Starbus LNG buses emits 30% less greenhouse gases than the vehicles running on conventional fuels, Kallanish Energy reports.
Their fuel carrying capacity is also up to 2.5 times more than of those compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered buses, enabling the vehicle to make 600-700km per tank fill.
“Tata Motors has taken a significant leap forward with a slew of alternate fuel technologies for sustainable mobility solutions and with the delivery of first Starbus LNG bus,” said Rohit Srivastava, VP for Product Line Buses at Tata Motors. “With the LNG technology, Tata Motors is not only optimistic and future-ready but is also extending that capability towards the energy security of the nation.”
The LNG system operates at lower pressure and evaporates quickly, reducing the chances of fire hazard.
