Energy experts in the UK said that two common appliances, the wireless speakers and the soundbars, can consume surprising levels of energy on standby, and advised to unplug them to reduce the costs.

The advice is mainly aimed at reaching the state pensioners as they are looking for ways to reduce costs amidst the recent 10% hike in energy bills. This got polarizing views from the people, some argued that this is just a superficial measure and it ignores the large-scale consumption of energy by non-fruitful organizations.

According to some others, this is a good solution that cutting down around 20 hours of standby time can significantly reduce power consumption. In this article, we will discuss these two views in depth and inform you of the recent measures and suggestions regarding energy use.

The Details of the Report: Why Wireless Speakers and Sound Bars?

These solutions appeared in “Which?”, a magazine published by the Consumers’ Association. Written by scholars in energy conservation, the focus is given to simple steps that householders can use to tackle the cost of daily-life appliances.

Wireless speakers and sound bars are often ignored when it comes to power consumption. If they are put on standby for daily 20 hours, it will generate an increase of approximately £6 per year. This might not seem huge, but considering the practicality and the number of gadgets, this can make a significant difference.

Is it a Superficial Solution? The Viewpoint of Critics

According to critics, the government should strictly monitor the power consumption of large organizations and companies that consume massive energy rather than going before the common citizens. The negligible cost reduction is nothing compared to the wastage from the industrial sector.

Providing silly pieces of advice to the people, the report is undermining the thinking capacity of energy consumers, especially pensioners. One serious opinion that came was when some users quoted the famous anthropologist late David Graeber.

David Graeber, in his book Bullsh*t Jobs, has argued that a large part of government-based jobs and industrial work is meaningless, and they can be eradicated to cut down energy use.

However, when we consider the practicality of this, it may take years to create a radical shift like the work in a state, and it will create at least a short-term unemployment issue.

Why Everybody’s Focus is on State Pensioners?

The state pensioners are desperately looking for solutions to cut down their costs. The revoke of their £300 Winter Fuel Payment has already created a negative impact on the governance, and the recent increase in the 10% bill for this Quarter has made it worse.

It was in July 2023, that the government decided to exclude around 10 million pensioners from the winter fuel payment by putting a low-income criteria to receive the benefits. In 6 months, the election will be here, and traditionally the electoral power is always with the older voters.

If the state pensioners’ well-being is at stake, it not only affects their families but will create an impact in the upcoming elections also.

The Importance of Carbon-friendly Gadgets

Most of the energy in the UK comes from fossil fuels, and that contributes almost 78% of the total electricity use. To build a sustainable future we have to rely on new innovative techniques that produce eco-friendly gadgets.

As the environment has gotten into a climate crisis, eco-friendly technology is needed and the state should motivate companies to do research on building new types of systems. Also, large-scale energy use by a small number of people should be taken more seriously in parallel to the minor changes in the usage in households.

Finally, still, we are not in the most dreadful situation. When everything falls in the right direction, we can tackle the environmental crisis easily. Let’s all together help Mother Nature, our home, to heal soon.
