Turkey is studying the safety of a 20% hydrogen blend into the domestic gas network to be used for heating, Kallanish Energy learns.

The country’s natural gas distributors association GAZBIR has carried out the test on a facility in Konya, in the Anatolia region. Preliminary tests have successfully shown energy efficiency increased while carbon emissions declined.

The project, backed by the Turkish government, aims to replace around 6% natural gas supplied in the grid with hydrogen. The alternative fuel could decrease greenhouse gas emissions, while also reducing reliance on gas imports.

Developers said the project should be concluded by the end of 2021, with no significant changes and upgrades to consumer infrastructure.
