The number of rigs drilling for oil and natural gas in the United States increased by three, according to a new report compiled by Baker Hughes, the Texas-based well service company.

There were 793 rigs working in the U.S., the company said in Friday’s latest report.

That is up three from February 28, 2020, and down 234 from March 8, 2019, it said.

The number of rigs operating in Canada dropped 37 from February 28 to 203, Baker Hughes said. That total is up 14 from a year ago.

According to Baker Hughes, the most active basins in the week were the Permian in West Texas and New Mexico with 415 rigs; the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas with 68; the Williston in North Dakota with 52; the Haynesville in Louisiana with 43; and the Marcellus Shale in the Appalachian Basin with 37.

The states with the most rigs at work were Texas, 404; New Mexico, 116; Louisiana, 52; North Dakota, 51; Oklahoma, 46; Pennsylvania, 24; and Colorado and Wyoming, both with 21.

Baker Hughes said the count for rigs drilling for oil increased by four to 682, while the number of rigs drilling for natural gas declined by one to 109.
