As summer settles into memory, September arrives with its own charm—cooler mornings, golden light, and a gentle nudge toward fall’s cozy routines. At the Marshall County Co-op, we’re embracing this shift with gardening tips, weather forecasts, and helpful reminders for what lies ahead.

What’s Ahead: Farmers’ Almanac Forecast for Fall 2025

The Farmers’ Almanac is predicting a volatile and active fall across much of the U.S.—and that includes our region in West Virginia. Expect early autumn thunderstorms, possible severe weather or even tornado risk over Labor Day weekend, and heightened hurricane concerns along the Atlantic Seaboard. As the season proceeds, early snow and frosts are expected in higher elevations, especially in October and November.

These shifting weather patterns serve as a reminder: preparing early is key.

September Gardening Tips

Fall isn’t just about winding down—it’s one of the best times to garden! Here’s how to make the most of it:

• Plant cool-season greens: Lettuce, kale, spinach, and broccoli thrive in September’s cooler temperatures.
• Divide and transplant perennials: Early fall is an ideal time to give them a head start before frost arrives.
• Mulch for winter protection: A 2–3-inch layer of organic mulch shields roots from frost, reduces erosion, conserves soil moisture, and adds nutrients as it decomposes.
• Prepare your soil and garden beds: Record planting zones for crop rotation, clear away diseased plants, and consider planting a cover crop—or at least spread mulch—to enrich the soil over winter.
• Add late-season color: Mums, pansies, and ornamental cabbage resist cooler temps and brighten your beds.

Prepare for Winter: Co-op Reminders

1. Book your propane delivery early—don’t wait until late fall when the rush begins.
2. Winterize tools and equipment: Clean, lubricate, and safely store mowers, trimmers, and hoses.
3. Switch to cold-weather fertilizers or soil amendments, especially if planning winter crops.
4. Check garden structures: Repair or secure raised beds, greenhouses, row-cover frames, and plant support to withstand wind or snow.
