In the last two working-rig surveys, the number of rigs working onshore in the Lower 48 U.S. states has fallen by 13 and,in the latest survey, risen by the same number – the biggest one-week positive move since a 17-rig jump recorded the week ended April 5, 2019.
For the week ended Jan. 17, 752 rigs were working in the Lower 48, up a baker’s dozen from the previous week, according to the Baker Hughes Co.’s weekly rig survey, Kallanish Energy reports.

The latest working-rig total was down 254 rigs, or 24.9%, from the year-ago total of 1,019, and was down 146 rigs, or 16.0%, from the 911 rigs working during the week ended Jan. 19, 2018.
Last week’s 765 total was up 102 working rigs, or 15.4%, from the 663 rigs working during the week ended Jan. 20, 2017.
Examining individual drilling areas, just two reported a week-to-week drop in working rigs, eight recorded an increase in working rigs, and 18 drilling areas saw no week-to-week change in the number of working rigs.
Texas gained the most working rigs from Jan. 10 to Jan. 17, adding five rigs and bringing its total to 400 from 395. New Mexico and North Dakota each added three rigs last week, climbing to 105 and 52, respectively.
