The U.S. Department of Justice applied today to seize the Iranian tanker held in Gibraltar after it was accused of carrying Iranian crude bound for Syria, violating EU sanctions.
UK marines seized the Grace 1 vessel July 4, anchoring it in Gibraltar, a British territory.
Deputy head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (Pmo), Jalil Eslami, said Tuesday the UK has been showing interest in resolving the issue, Kallanish Energy understands. The detention order was valid until today.
A spokesperson for the government of Gibraltar said the U.S. asked to seize it “on a number of allegations which are now being considered.”
“The matter will return to the Supreme Court of Gibraltar at 4:00pm (CEST) today,” the Gibraltar government said in an email sent to Kallanish Energy.
