A federal judge has invalidated 287 oil and natural gas leases in Montana because the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) failed to comply with federal environmental regulations, Kallanish Energy reports.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge Brian Morris in Great Falls, Montana, covers 2017-2018 leases that together covered about 150,000 acres on public lands.
He ruled that the assessment by the Bureau of land Management violated the federal National Environmental Policy Act by failing to assess drilling impacts on groundwater and climate change.
The agency had reported that it found no significant impacts in reviewing the federal leases.
The agency said it disagreed with the ruling.
