FirstEnergy Solutions Corp. (Fes) announced Friday it is moving up its timetable to shutdown its remaining coal-fired unit in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, due to a “lack of economic viability in current market conditions.”
The company has notified grid overseer PJM Interconnection Bruce Mansfield Plant Unit 3 will be deactivated on Nov. 7, 2019 – not June 1, 2021, as previously stated, Kallanish Energy reports.
Fes previously deactivated Mansfield’s Units 1 and 2, located in Shippingport, northwest of Pittsburgh on Feb. 5. Deactivation activities are projected to be completed by May 2020.
Fes, its subsidiaries and FENOC (FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co.) voluntarily filed for bankruptcy on March 31, 2018. The case is proceeding in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio, in Akron.
