Florida regulators have approved Florida Power & Light’s $1.8 billion SolarTogether program, Kallanish Energy reports.
Approval came from the Florida Public Service Commission.
SolarTogether will be the largest voluntary community solar program in the United States.
It will make going 100% solar an option for FPL customers and will more than double the amount of community solar in the United States.
The program calls for the addition of 20 new solar power plants, each with about 74.5 megawatts and totaling 1,490 megawatts of solar by mid-2021.
So far, more than 150,000 customers have shown interest in the program and the first public enrollment is scheduled to begin on March 17.
Most of the new solar capacity will be dedicated to commercial customers, said FPL, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy and Florida’s largest electric utility with about 10 million customers.
It is expected to produce about $249 million in net cost savings to participants and utility customers, it said.
Community solar programs allow multiple subscribers to get electricity from a larger project.
Each month, participants will receive a fixed subscription charge based on the amount of their subscription as well as a subscription credit that is determined by the output from the associated solar power plants.
Over time, the subscription credit will increase, resulting in a net-zero charge for participation, the utility said.
Nineteen U.S. states and the District of Columbia have adopted community or shared solar programs.
Florida regulators approved the proposal as part of a settlement agreement announced last October to avoid a lawsuit.
The program would set aside 37.5 megawatts of solar electricity to serve low-income families.
Solar is a key part of FPL’s long-range plans to install 30 million solar panels by 2030 and to build the world’s largest solar battery storage facility in Manatee County.
The 20 new solar power plants for SolarTogether will join 18 current solar power plants in operation and another four that are under construction, the utility said.
At present, FPL has about 1,250 megawatts of solar capacity.
