Cricket Valley Energy Center (concept drawing)
In October 2012, after a rigorous review by New York’s Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) during the State Environmental Quality Review, the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) submitted by Cricket Valley Energy Center in Dutchess County was accepted and approved. Construction of the 1,100 megawatt plant (to fed by PA Marcellus gas) began in July 2017 (see Second NY NatGas-Fired Elec Plant Breaks Ground in Hudson Valley) and is due to be completed early next year. As it gets close to completion, anti-fossil fuel neighbors from across the street are asking the DEC to perform a new study of the facility before allowing it to start operation. They’re making outrageous claims that gas-fired plants may cause autism.
Yes, we bet you didn’t know that natgas plants (of which there are hundreds across the country) cause “increased respiratory disease, cancer rates and growing levels of autism.” Pure rubbish.
In the antis’ pitch to the DEC, asking the agency to perform a new EIS (called a Supplemental EIS, or SEIS), the couple from across the street say they “are concerned that once operational this huge power plant will have negative results on their neighborhood and our planet.” It is that last bit about “our planet” that’s the tip-off that these folks are not really concerned air and water quality. They’re irrational fossil fuel haters. (We’d wager big money they hypocritically heat their home with fossil fuels.)
Neighbors who live across the street from the Cricket Valley electric generating plant in Dover site have urged the state Department of Environmental Conservation to require a supplemental environmental impact statement to study “profound effects” of the 1,100-megawatt power plant being constructed across the street from their home.
Joseph and Renee McEntee “are concerned that once operational this huge power plant will have negative results on their neighborhood and our planet,” said attorney Michael Sussman, who along with attorney Joshua Douglass, is representing the couple.
The lawyers maintain that “since there has been radical growth in our collective knowledge of the health and safety effects of this massive plant since completion of the last environmental review in 2011, the DEC should order the project sponsor to prepare an SEIS.”
They said the plant will release “tons” of particulate matter annually and is “correlated with increased respiratory disease, cancer rates and growing levels of autism.”
Sussman said the McEntees believe the DEC “should disallow Cricket Valley from operating pending completion and review of the SEIS and DEC’s determination as to whether the environmental damage caused by this facility or is simply too inconsistent with state energy policies to be permitted.”*
The problem is, with Andrew Cuomo installed as permanent dictator of NY State (in control of and having corrupted the DEC), one doesn’t know what he may do. It’s possible he’ll tell the DEC to block the new plant, just to please his radical political base.
