Our local manufacturers want you to know that manufacturing is alive in well in Stark County and in NE Ohio. Manufacturing is a viable career pathway and that message is one of the driving forces in the newly created Stark Manufacturing Workforce Development Partnership. Industry Sector Partnerships (ISP) are a proven workforce development strategy that put employers in the driver’s seat and have demonstrated effectiveness across the country. Manufacturers within a regional labor market work together to influence alignment around common solutions with education and training, economic and workforce development, and community organizations.
We are happy to report that after collective efforts by the Chamber, MAGNET and SEDB to convene local employers, a Stark Manufacturing Workforce Development Partnership has launched. The Ohio Manufacturer’s Association is facilitating early discussions with a group of Stark County thought leaders in manufacturing. In less than two months the group has identified immediate priorities, opportunities and actions that promote manufacturing as a career pathway.
The key components of an Industry Sector Partnership (ISP) include:
- Led by employers – to ensure the system is truly employer-led demand-driven and will lead to better outcomes for individuals.
- Focused on a single industry – to allow employers to connect with peers from their own industry, identify needs beyond basic workplace skills, and dive deeply into the technical needs of the industry.
- Regional – to address unique needs of subsectors while reflecting the true dynamics within a regional economy.
- Convened by a neutral intermediary – to align all relevant partner programs and resources as solutions to identified industry needs.
The Stark Manufacturing Partnership will reach out to education, training, community and workforce organizations in the coming weeks and months to initiate, strengthen and augment these strategic partnerships in order to build a robust manufacturing talent pipeline system.
Tom Schmidt of Barbco, Inc., has been elected as Vice President for the recently formed Stark County Manufacturer’s Workforce Development Partnership. He will serve under James Batchelder who is the SCMWDP President. James is the President of the M.K. Morse Company in Canton, Ohio.
