U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has promised to sign an executive order on her first day as president to ban hydraulic fracturing or fracking, Kallanish Energy reports.
She promised to ban fracking “everywhere,” she said in a tweet last Friday.
She also pledged to impose a total moratorium on new federal fossil fuel leases including public lands onshore and drilling offshore.
Warren has adopted the climate change plan espoused by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee before he dropped out of the presidential race.
Companies that rely on carbon-based fuels will be “done” by 2035, Warren said.
Warren not alone
She is not alone in attacking fracking.
Other Democratic presidential candidates including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Sen. Kamela Harris, D-Calif., and Sen. Corey Booker, D-N,J., have all called for fracking bans of various sorts.
Last week, Sanders called for fracking ban on public and private lands.
“Fracking is a danger to our water supply. It’s a danger to the air we breathe. It causes earthquakes. It’s highly explosive. Safe fracking is, like clean coal, pure fiction,” Sanders said in a statement.
Methane also contributes to climate change, he said. ”When we are in the White House, we will end the era of fossil fuels, and that includes fracking,” he said.
Fracking has been used widely and safely used by the energy industry since the 1940s to extract oil and natural gas.
President Donald Trump, a Republican, has pushed for more oil and gas drilling on public lands and offshore.
