Industries
Natural Gas
Natural gas is a vital, clean, and growing global energy source with vast supplies under constant development in North America and the rest of the world. The production, gathering, transportation, and distribution of natural gas requires continuous innovation to remain competitive among other energy sources. Engineers and scientists have created a critical industry supplying nearly one-fourth of the world’s energy needs from what was once considered only a byproduct of oil production.
Natural gas occurs “naturally” underground and is comprised of a mixture of components, usually primarily methane with other light hydrocarbons and inorganic compounds. The chemical analysis of natural gas is necessary to understand the processes required to safely transform the gas into a useable fuel, and to determine its monetary value. Prior to analysis, natural gas must be made suitable for introduction into analysis equipment (analyzers), a process known commonly as “sample conditioning.”
Mustang Sampling is the leading provider of Analytically Accurate® systems for sample conditioning within the Natural Gas industry. Each product or system is specifically designed to transport a natural gas sample from the pipeline to the analyzer(s) without changing the composition of the sample itself. This “representative” sample is then used for the analysis of the natural gas composition for monetary value (custody transfer), compliance, or safety.
Liquefied Natural Gas
Liquefied Natural Gas is a cryogenic liquid form of natural gas with most of the heavy components removed (it is predominantly methane with some ethane, propane, and nitrogen). The liquefaction of natural gas allows its transportation over long distances without pipelines, typically using ships, rail, or trucks. The global trade of LNG is expected to double in the next ten years as natural gas exceeds 25% of global energy sources. LNG is used to supplement natural gas distribution systems (which typically rely on pipeline supplies), to generate electrical power, for meeting peak demands, and as engine fuel.
The energy content of LNG varies considerably depending on the composition of the source gas as well as the process used to convert the gas to a liquid. Additionally, the average energy value of a bulk container of LNG changes with time, or ages, since the methane evaporates at a different rate than the other components. These facts in combination with the difficulties associated with any cryogenic fluid (LNG has a boiling point of -162°C) make LNG an unusual and very challenging liquid to measure.
Mustang Sampling has a long history of LNG sampling, starting with efforts to import LNG into the United States during the 90’s. Mustang Sampling continues to provide best-in-class technologies for small and large scale LNG custody transfer. The patented Mustang Sampling Vaporizer provides the core for a variety of sample conditioning systems suitable for cryogenic service.
Mustang Sampling provides LNG Import & Export Custody Transfer solutions globally, peak shaving solutions, complete bunkering systems, and LNG load rack solutions (truck transport). Mustang Sampling products include Certiprobes, vacuum jacketed tubing, vaporizers, composite sample systems, manual sample systems, and custom software.
Natural Gas Liquids
Natural Gas Liquids are derivatives of natural gas and are used extensively as fuels, feedstock for petrochemical plants, and in the production of plastic. Natural Gas Liquid production associated with nonconventional shale drilling has created a surge in the availability of liquids and furthered the need to handle these liquids properly.
Natural Gas Liquids are found naturally within natural gas formations but change physical states (gas, liquid, or solid) depending upon the pressure and temperature. The state within the reservoir at very high pressures and temperatures may be different than the same composition at the surface of the well. Safe handling and appropriate processing of Natural Gas Liquids requires intimate knowledge of phase behavior and control.
Mustang Sampling is an industry pioneer and a leading provider of Analytically Accurate® systems for Natural Gas Liquids. Each product or system is specially designed to transport a natural gas liquid sample from the pipeline to the analyzer(s) without changing the composition of the sample itself, regardless of phase. Mustang Sampling achieves this by controlling the phase transition using a specially designed vaporizing system. This “representative” sample is then used for the analysis of the natural gas liquid composition for monetary value (custody transfer), plant balance, compliance, or safety.
Renewable Natural Gas
Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) consists of multiple names: bio-methane, swamp gas, landfill gas, and digester gas. This gaseous discharge is a product of anaerobic digestion which is the decomposition of waste material without the presence of oxygen. In addition, this product, when processed to purity standards, can be used as renewable gas and can be used as a fuel for plant heaters, power generators, and natural gas vehicles.
Captured RNG from an anaerobic process reduces emissions to the atmosphere and is used as a green energy fuel. RNG production is a result of anaerobic digestion whereby the solids are converted to methane and carbon dioxide gas. Municipalities around the globe are significantly reducing their operating costs and improving efficiency by harnessing a byproduct of the anaerobic process. They are turning to biogas co-generation as a alternate energy source.
The biogas can be processed into a high quality fuel for vehicle and power generation.
Scrubbers are needed for the removal of Hydrogen Sulfide and sulfur species, moisture, Siloxanes, and carbon dioxide in some applications.
To confirm the quality of the cleaned biogas, the Mustang® Biogas Sampling System will sample the gas prior to and after the gas cleaning process. This begins at the sample probe located in the raw gas pipeline. The sample tubing and the sample conditioning panel are electrically heated to slightly above the sample dew point to prevent loss of any gas components. Analyzing prior to and after the gas cleaning will help determine the performance of the cleaning process and also determine the scheduling of the filter media cleaning and or replacements.
Gas Processing
Gas Processing is a complex process designed to clean raw natural gas by separating impurities and various non-methane hydrocarbons and fluids. Mustang Sampling’s products and systems are ideal for these applications.

Our expertise in enclosures enables us to provide field-proven solutions and our in-house design and integration team gives us control over every step of the process.
Pipeline Metering Skids
Mustang Sampling designs and builds custom pipeline metering skids for Natural Gas, Natural Gas Liquids and Liquefied Natural Gas in compliance to all Federal, State and Local codes. Mustang Sampling brings decades of design and operational experience from dozens of major pipeline companies, as well as invaluable instrumentation experience from the industry leaders, to offer optimized solutions in the measurement and regulation arena. From simple single meter run designs to complex proving or control systems, Mustang Sampling has a solution.
Most meter station designs start with flow rate. It is important to maintain an uninterrupted flow of gas and consideration of maximum and minimum flows need to be taken in. Various metering technologies are available including ultrasonic and Coriolis meters. Multiple meter runs are used when the maximum design flow rates are required for turndown between maximum and minimal flows. Automated valves are used to open or close a meter run as required to maintain flow rates through an individual meter within a range recommended by the manufacturer. Pressure and temperature transmitters, temperature thermowells, test thermowells and a chromatography probe when using an ultrasonic meter should be included.
Gas quality needs to be taken in to account. Many companies use a filter-separator before the meter station and will do continuous gas sampling using a Mustang Sampling Analytically Accurate® system. Usually a gas analyzer is installed to monitor gas for H2S, O2, N2, CO2 and other contamination that exceed quality requirements.
For safe access and maneuvering around equipment Mustang Sampling offers solutions such as handrails, access platforms, walkways and stairs.
