The latest facts and a rumor from the Marcellus and Utica Shale

U.S. Geological Survey Give Utica Shale Estimate

Drilling companies beginning to explore the Utica Shale got a piece of good news Friday when the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the rock formation in Ohio, Pennsylvania and other states holds enormous reserves of natural gas and oil.

Releasing its first estimate of the Utica, the USGS calculated the shale formation holds about 38 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered, recoverable natural gas, 940 million barrels of oil and 9 million barrels of natural gas liquids like ethane and propane. Marcellus Shale has 84 trillion cubic feet.

Rigs switching to natural gas and realizing considerable savings.

Ensign Energy Services is using gas processed and fueled directly from the well site. One drilling rig running on diesel, for example, consumes about $4,653 worth of fuel a day. By switching to natural gas the cost, would be only $1,322 a day on fuel.

Ethane Going to Europe

INEOS Europe on Thursday said it completed supply and infrastructure agreements that will secure a significant volume of ethane feedstock from the US, for use in its European cracker complexes.

The company has agreed to a long-term deal with US-based Range Resources for the lifting of ethane from the Marcus Hook facility in Pennsylvania, starting in 2015.

Consol Drilling in Mahoning County

Consol is drilling in Mahoning. One site is at 12801 Blott Road is mostly secluded but past the guard gate, several trailers, man-made barriers and equipment surround the 164-foot tall rig. The rig is the second to drill into the ground in Mahoning County and will be the first of two at the site.

Chesapeake “Green Fracking”

Chesapeake Energy Corp., the second- largest U.S. natural gas producer, is testing hydraulic- fracturing fluids composed solely of environmentally-benign components in wells.

Chesapeake plans to develop a 100 percent green mixture of fluids used to fracture gas and oil formations underground.

Rex Energy Drilling information in Ohio Counties

Rex Energy announced initial production results from its first Ohio Utica Shale well and provided an update on its operations.

Warrior Prospect, Carroll County, Ohio

  • The Brace #1H was brought online to sales from its 60-day resting period at a 24-hour sales rate, assuming full ethane recovery, of 1.09 MBOE/d. Based on composition analysis, the oil is 60.1 degree API and the gas is 1,250 BTU.
  • Drilling of nine additional wells and completion of six wells are planned in 2013.

Warrior South Prospect, Noble, Guernsey and Belmont Counties, Ohio

  • The Guernsey #1H well was drilled and cased.
  • A second well, the Noble #1H, is being drilled. Drilling of all three planned wells are expected by end-2012.

EQT Moving into Ohio

Based on conversations at WVONGA Expo, it looks like EQT may be moving into OH (Rumor)

Shame on Matt Damon

Matt Damon’s film, “Promise Land” which highlights the dangers of fracking was financed the United Arab Emirates, an OPEC member and the world’s third-largest oil exporter.  Why does Matt Damon want the U.S. to be dependent on Arab oil?
