Latest facts and a rumor from the Marcellus and Utica Shale

  • MarkWest and Rex Energy get together.  MarkWest Utica EMG, L.L.C. (MarkWest Utica EMG), a joint venture between MarkWest Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE: MWE) (MarkWest) and The Energy and Minerals Group (EMG), today announced definitive agreements with Rex Energy Corporation (NYSE:REXX) (Rex) to provide gathering, processing, fractionation, and marketing services in the Utica Shale.

In Rex Energy’s Warrior South Prospect, the company holds approximately 4,100 net acres. To date, the company drilled and completed three wells in the Warrior South Prospect. These wells have been shut-in since their completion and will be placed into sales once the related infrastructure is in place. In 2013, Rex Energy plans to drill and complete four additional wells and place into service seven wells in the Warrior South Prospect.

I think the Warrior South Prospect area is in Carroll County, OH.  If anyone knows, please send me an email.  Thanks.
  • PA DEP addressing permit backlog.  I saw news blurb the PA’s DEP is addressing the backlog in permits.  I did not realize there was one, but we’ll monitor the information to see if there is an increase in PA permits.
  • ODNR latest permits. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Oil & Gas Resources Management has approved seven new permits for Utica shale drilling.  That brings Ohio's total through Feb. 9 to 518 permits.

The new permits are: four in Carroll County, two in Belmont County and one in Columbiana County.
  • Are you missing the opportunities in Lawrence, County PA?  In driving around Lawrence County last Tuesday, I stopped in Darlington (twelve miles from New Castle, PA), Lawrence County PA for gas.  In speaking with some of the locals, they told me that there were probably 10 wells, yes 10 wells, within three miles of Darlington.  I asked about who was doing the drilling.  They thought most of it was Shell which corresponds to what we heard about Shell telling vendors to move to New Castle, PA.  Obviously, Shell is making impact in Lawrence County PA. (Rumor)
  • Magnum Hunter Committing to SE OH and the WV panhandle. Magnum Hunter Chairman and CEO Gary Evans was on hand Monday in Marietta, Ohio for the grand opening of the new regional office building for Magnum’s Marcellus and Utica Shale subsidiary Triad Hunter. Triad has (so far) leased 85,500 acres in the Marcellus Shale and 81,800 acres in the Utica Shale. The new office is located centrally to both the Marcellus and Utica plays—together referred to as Appalachia.

Triad spent $1 million to remodel a downtown Marietta building that will be their Marcellus/Utica regional headquarters. So far over 40 Triad employees have moved in. Magnum Hunter, through subsidiaries including Triad Hunter, Alpha Hunter, Eureka Hunter, Green Hunter Water and Viking International Resources has its fingers in a lot of different pieces of the drilling pie. According to Gary Evans, their commitment to Appalachia is long-term.
  • More info on Ohio’s January permits with well locations. (Thank you, Farm & Dairy) Carroll County continues to lead Ohio for the number of shale permits issued, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ shale permit list for January.

Single permits were issued in Center, Perry, and Fox townships in Carroll County. Four permits were issued for well sites in Washington Township.

Five separate permits were issued to well sites in Loudon Township. All of the permits issued were to Chesapeake Exploration.

    Noble County

Noble County also moved to the top of the list, with five permits issued in Enoch Township in January. All of them were issued to CNX Gas Co. LLC. In addition, a permit was also issued to Antero Reserve Appalachian Corporation in Beaver Township, according to the ODNR.

    Guernsey County

Guernsey County also appears to be heating up, as more permits were issued in that county during January. A total of four permits were issued to Hess Ohio Developments in Oxford Township. In addition, single permits were issued to EQT Production Company in Valley Township and PDC Energy Inc. in Richland Township.

    Columbiana County

There were three permits issued in Columbiana County. Two permits were issued to well sites in Franklin and Center townships to Chesapeake Exploration. One permit was issued in Salem Township to the Hilcorp Energy Company.

Two separate companies received permits in Harrison County. Chesapeake Exploration received two permits in Stock Township and one in Moorefield Township.

According to the ODNR, in Short Creek Township, one permit was issued to Hess Ohio Resources.

    Belmont County

In Belmont County, three permits were issued. Two in Washington Township were issued to Gulfport Energy Corporation and one in Richland Township to the Hess Ohio Development.

    Jefferson County

One permit was issued in Mahoning County. The Hilcorp Energy Corporation received the go-ahead for a well site in Poland Township.

  • MarkWest adding midstream in Noble County, OH.   According to MarkWest, the Cadiz processing complex will include a de-ethanization facility where ethane will be produced and delivered into the ATEX Express ethane pipeline. This pipeline will transport ethane from the Utica and Marcellus shale regions to the Gulf Coast for cracking.

The propane, butane and other, heavier natural gas liquids will flow via pipeline from Cadiz to the Hopedale fractionator for further separation. Together, these facilities will represent the largest fractionation and marketing complex in the Utica Shale, providing 100,000 barrels per day of fractionation capacity by early next year, MarkWest officials said.

In addition to its Harrison processing complex, MarkWest is developing a second processing complex in Noble County. The Harrison and Noble processing complexes will be connected through a gathering system to the Harrison fractionation complex.
  • Consol strikes deal with Pittsburgh Airport.  Consol Energy Inc. will pay an estimated $500 million over the next 20 years for the right to drill for shale gas on 9,263 acres surrounding the Findlay airport.
  • Gulfport Energy acquiring more leases in OH.  Gulfport Energy Corp. is adding to its property in the Utica Shale, which is believed to hold enormous reserves of natural gas and oil.

The oil and gas producer said Monday that it will buy about 22,000 acres in the Utica Shale in eastern Ohio for about $220 million from Windsor Ohio, an affiliate of investment firm Wexford Capital. It's paying for the deal with help from a stock offering of 7.8 million shares, also launched Monday.

In December Gulfport acquired 37,000 acres from Windsor Ohio. The new deal, expected to close before the end of the month, would bring Gulfport's interest in the Utica Shale to about 128,000 acres.
