No Price War. As oil prices soar, U.S. shale, OPEC in no rush to resume price war. Reuters. U.S. shale producers and OPEC, who not long ago were waging a price war, this week found themselves on similar sides as oil prices have surged well above $100 a barrel: in no rush to rapidly boost production. Less than a decade ago, OPEC was flooding the market with oil in a bid to drive out U.S. producers, who were enjoying surging production as improvements in hydraulic fracturing brought on the so-called “shale boom.” But on Monday night, at an oil conference in Houston, both sides gathered in a private room at a restaurant and U.S. producers presented OPEC Secretary General Mohammad Barkindo with a bottle labeled “Genuine Barnett Shale” – from the oilfield that launched the shale revolution.
“More Oil!!” White House tells oil industry ‘we need more’ as fuel prices soar. The US is engaged in an increasingly frantic search to replace oil supplies lost from Russia as it tries to repair diplomatic rifts abroad and boost production at home to stop fuel prices from spiraling out of control. Jennifer Granholm, US energy secretary, on Wednesday told an audience of industry executives that the country was on a “war footing,” adding: “That means you producing more right now, where and if you can”. Her plea for domestic oil companies to boost supplies is a pivot for a Biden administration that has burnished its green credentials, underscoring the new political reality after the US this week banned oil and gas imports from Russia.
U.S. Oil & Gas Association President: “Cut the crap and approve our permits”. Tim Stewart, president of the U.S. Oil and Gas Association, had a straightforward response to Biden’s March 8 comments. “Cut the crap and approve our permits.” Biden administration officials are making overtures to Venezuela, Iran, and Saudi Arabia in the hopes that those countries will boost production and reduce oil prices. “Venezuela has probably some of the dirtiest oil in the world,” Garg said. “Even if they remove the sanctions, that industry is in such a collapsed state that it’s going to require hundreds of billions of dollars and expertise from America.” “Higher oil and gas prices make electric vehicles and renewable energy more price competitive,” Blackmon said. “This is illustrated by the fact that officials like Pete Buttigieg continue to double down on that agenda as the ‘solution’ to our high gasoline price issue. That’s why you see him, Biden, and Kamala Harris advocate for more oil from Venezuela and Iran, but not from our own domestic industry.”
Biden & the Saudis’. Biden is courting Saudi Arabia and Venezuela as he bans Russian energy imports. Here’s what he might be up to. Fortune. Gas sure is expensive these days. It hit an all-time high of $4.17 a gallon this week, and that was before President Joe Biden took the once-unthinkable step of banning Russian oil imports on Tuesday. To give you an idea of how wild that is, Biden and his allies in Western Europe had chosen in late February to sanction just about everything except for Russian oil, even after Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It took more than a week of fighting, and Putin rattling a nuclear saber, before Biden took this step.
NatGas Is by Far Much Cheaper. Natural gas is lowest cost way to heat your home. Sen. Martin Heinrich’s Twitter feed you might believe that natural gas is the dirtiest fuel known to humankind, not one of the cleanest. Heinrich (and AG Hector Balderas) both oppose natural gas for home heating and cooking on environmental grounds. Heinrich even attempts to claim that electricity is a cheaper means of heating your home. But the US Department of Energy just released a new report stating that natural gas IS indeed MUCH cheaper than electricity for heating one’s home. As seen below, natural gas at $12.09 per million Btu is more than three times cheaper than electricity at $41.79 per million Btu.
Exxon May Sell Bakken Assets. Exxon weighs Bakken asset sale after getting interest. Bloomberg. Exxon Mobil Corp. is considering a sale of assets in North Dakota’s Bakken shale after being approached by interested parties, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The oil giant could get about $5 billion for the Bakken assets, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak. Exxon is in the final round of interviewing bankers to help launch a sale process, one of the people said.
Possible $3 Billion Sale. Shale gas producer HG Energy weighs possible $3 billion sale. HG Energy LLC, a private equity-backed natural gas explorer, is talking to advisers about selling itself as energy prices surge, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The West Virginia-based company could seek more than $3 billion in a sale, said one of the people, who asked to not be identified because the matter isn’t public. HG and private equity firm Quantum Energy Partners haven’t made a final decision on pursuing a sale and their plans could change, the people said. Representatives for HG Energy and Houston-based Quantum Energy didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment after regular business hours.
Shale Deals Stalled. Some shale deals stall after Russian ban whipsaws oil prices. Bloomberg. Some oil and gas dealmakers are hitting the pause button as prices whipsaw following the ban on Russian oil imports. Companies are concerned about overpaying for assets while focused on cutting debt and rewarding shareholders. For example, the owners of Sequitur Energy Resources are holding onto 83,000 net acres in part of the Permian Basin the company began marketing about six months ago, according to people familiar with the matter. The closely held company sought a higher valuation than what the market gave, said the people, who asked to not be identified because the matter isn’t public.
The Brits Could Be Fracking. Boris Johnson opens door to fracking in response to Ukraine war. Financial Times. Boris Johnson has paved the way for a possible lifting of the UK ban on fracking for shale gas as he draws up a new energy supply strategy following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The prime minister is seeking more domestic sources of energy after unveiling plans on Tuesday for a British ban on Russian oil imports, which triggered the biggest one-day price increase in diesel in more than 20 years. Johnson has asked ministers to take a fresh look at whether shale gas could help meet the UK’s energy needs and is also considering accelerating the rollout of renewable energy projects including onshore and offshore wind farms.
Appalachian Basin Can Boost LNG. How Appalachia would boost production of LNG. EQT Corp.’s proposal to dramatically ramp up the nation’s liquified natural gas production for domestic and export use, put forth at an industry conference in Texas on Wednesday, envisions Appalachia’s natural gas industry as having a big role. “Unleash LNG” is a 56-page document, available on the EQT website, that outlines the company’s plan that would involve not just EQT, but also the wider oil and gas industry, policymakers and elected officials, and others in the business community. It calls for adding about 45 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas production to the nation’s totals, enough to both meet domestic needs as well, EQT says, to take a big chunk out of the climate crisis by sidelining the carbon emissions of international coal burning.
An Independent NatGas Monitor in TX. Possibility of creating a new independent natural gas monitor gains traction at Texas Capitol. The idea of creating another level of monitoring over Texas’ natural gas industry appears to be gaining some traction among state lawmakers. At a meeting of the Senate’s Business and Commerce Committee on Wednesday, several senators, both Republicans and Democrats, seemed to show support for the idea. The discussion came as leaders of Texas’ grid operator, the Public Utility Commission and the chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission, testified before the committee. Sen. Donna Campbell, R-New Braunfels, indicated that she might file legislation that would create more transparency into the Texas natural gas market.
